CIEH Level 2 Award in Paediatric First Aid

The national standards for first aid in childcare settings state that 'at least one person who has a current paediatric first-aid certificate must be on the premises at all times when children are present'. Additionally, at least one person with a current paediatric first-aid certificate must accompany every outing.

The Practice Guidance in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets out the first-aid training requirements for Ofsted-regulated child-care settings. This guidance includes details of the course content and the duration of the training. The CIEH Level 2 Award in Paediatric First Aid has been developed to meet these requirements and is based on the QCF Units F/600/2036 and J/600/2037.

Who needs this qualification

The CIEH Level 2 Award in Paediatric First Aid is primarily aimed at those working in child-care settings, but it will be useful for anyone with responsibility for caring for infants and children. This includes parents.

Suggested progression: On successful completion of the CIEH Level 2 Award in Paediatric First Aid, candidates are issued with a certificate, which the CIEH strongly recommends is renewed every three years in line with the HSE requirement for Emergency First Aid at Work and First Aid at Work.

The HSE strongly recommends that all first aiders do an annual half-day refresher course to help them to maintain their basic skills and keep up-to-date with any changes to first-aid procedures.

The CIEH therefore strongly recommends that those performing the role of paediatric first aider in a child-care setting undertake an annual paediatric refresher.
